Historical visit to the roots of evangelization at E. African coast

Students and lecturers of the Catholic University of eastern Africa (CUEA), recently made a historic tour to the roots of evangelization of the east coast of eastern Africa - to Mombasa and Malindi where they visted Fort Jesus and Vasco Da Gama Pillar respectively - concrete and living signs of the impact of the first missionaries from Europe to this coastal region of East Africa.

Fort Jesus is associated with the Agostinian Missionaries from Portugal who arrived in Mombasa in 1593, while St. Francis Xavior converted Vasco da Gama's house into a chapel that still stands, almost 517 years after Da Gama built it as a security fortress on his way to India. hurch celebrates this history and the universality of the Church that are characteristic of the Catholic Church, remarks Fr. Joseph Ekomwa, coordinator of the tour.

A Catholic University at the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro!

The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) has granted a fully fledged university status to Mwenge University College of Education, MWUCE, a constituent college of St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT).

This means that students being admitted to MWUCE for the academic year 2014/2015 will be admitted and undertake their studies under the new Mwenge Catholic University (MWECAU).  This is a big step in the academic arena of Tanzania.

During the inauguration of the new a academic year 20124/2015 on Monday September 22, 2014, Rt. Rev. Isaac Amani Chair of the governing Board of MWUCE and Bishop of Moshi, on behalf of the Chancellor of Tanzania's Catholic Universities, Rt. Rev. Tarcisius Ngalalekumtwa announced Rev. Dr. Philbert Vumilia to be the Acting Vice Chancellor of the new university.

was a big step forward for the whole community of Mwenge, and that now the focus of society will be directed to Mwenge following the added responsibility.  He urged on the administration, academic staff, students and all stakeholders to work hand in hand to ensure the integral development of the society of Tanzania through education.

On his part, the Rev Dr. Philbert Vumilia thanked the Tanzania Commission for Universities for approving MWUCE to upgrade to a university status.  He also congratulated both the staff members and students of MWUCE for contributing towards this achievement.  

“Let us keep up the spirit for the development of Tanzania and the service of the people of God”, said Dr. Vumilia who has worked tirelessly with the staff, students, bishops and TCU to implement the requirements of TCU for a university status for MWUCE.  Dr. Vumilia has been the Principal of MWUCE until his appointment as the Acting VC.

Bishop Amani also announced Dr. Modestus Levira and Rev. Dr. Eugene Lyamtane as the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics and Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration and Finance, respectively. 

The TCU letter granting a fully fledged university status to Mwenge University College of Education read in part that TCU “Grants approval to transform MWUCE to a fully fledged University called Mwenge Catholic University (MWECAU) with effect from the 2014/2015 academic year….”

As Mwenge Catholic University (MWECAU) succeeds MWUCE, we applaud the milestones of this higher learning institution which has so far touched the lives of many people both within and outside the country as guided by it Motto: Lux Mundi (Latin for Light of the world). 

MWUCE, a secular and private institution of higher learning under the ownership and management of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) is situated in Moshi.  MWUCE was established in 2005 as a constituent College of St. Augustine University of Tanzania, SAUT.  MWUCE is a successor of St. Joseph’s Teachers College that was founded in 2001 to offer the National Diploma in Education that trained secondary school Science teachers. 

Both St. Joseph’s Teachers College and Mwenge University College have striven to excel in teaching and learning, research and community service in line with the college’s mission of producing competent professionals who are socially responsible citizens who are committed to work for the benefit of the society of Tanzania and beyond.  This is the vision that MWECAU will continue with in her efforts to provide quality and integral education as a fully fledged university.

Say "No" to Violence!

Today (November 25th)  the world marks the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women.  On this day too, begins the 16 days of activism against gender based violence.  The 16 days campaign recognize the dignity of women, their contribution to society and the need for the society to appreciate them and intensify efforts to curb all forms of violence meted against women in many parts of the world. The 16 days culminate with the celebration of International Human Rights Day on 10th December.  

This year (2013), the United Nations' theme for the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women is: Unite to End Violence Against Women. 

It is imperative for all people to commit themselves to end all forms of gender based violence and hence promote a peaceful and violence free society for the benefit of all children, women and men of our human family.
